Spanish National Committee of the United World Colleges

Spain, Madrid 2017
The Spanish National Committee of the United World Colleges organisation undertook a series of actions to reduce the environmental impact of its annual selection process.

The organisation made a move to purchase more sustainable products, including food with a lower carbon footprint. The purchasing focused on the Committee's the most important annual events: the pre-selection process that took over two different weekends in November, and the selection process, which took place at the end of January. A total of about 100 people attended these three events. The organisation focused purchases away from disposable plastic, vegetarian and vegan options that substituted the meat options of previous years, and also fruit, nuts, and juices or vegetable-based drinks that substituted processed foods such as biscuits and fuzzy drinks, respectively. The organisation also developed a recycling plan for the events.
